In Year one we are...

and happy to be us!
Last year, Year one wrote to David Attenborough in the hope that he might write back. We were lucky enough to receive a signed photo, but not a letter. Will he write back this year?
This week is test week. Year one children are taking it all in their stride as usual! What incredible little people we have in Saxon class!

Year one and two had a fabulous time at their swimming lesson on Monday. They used floats to practice kicking their legs and blowing bubbles, with their faces in the water. Well done everyone.
Today in Maths, we have been learning about arrays. We found out that an array has columns and rows. We have had lots of fun using cubes to make our own colourful arrays!
05/05 Saxon class are rounding up our topic on the environment by drafting a letter to Sir David Attenborough telling him how we can save our planet. Will he write back this year?

03/05- Year one have been using dice to represent equal and unequal groups of numbers.
Thank you to our class councillor Finley, for feeding back the minutes from the school council meeting.
We Love playing on the climbing equipment during play! We can all just about reach the monkey bars- something we have been trying to do all year long!
In maths this week, we have been recapping our 2,5 and 10 times tables, as well as counting forwards and backwards to 100!
This week, year one have been learning how to write letters. They have made sure to include questions so that the recipient is able to respond. Here are some of our finished letters.
Year one and two have been making cards for a little girl who will be visiting the UK from the Ukraine, and staying with one of the children in Saxon class.

Year one and 2 had fun making Easter cards for their loved ones!

Ending the week with a bit of a song and a dance! Year 1 performed their version of the story 'The Little Red Hen' in our whole school assembly. There was some 'cracking' acting, and some 'eggsellent' singing! Well done year one!
Mia's reading challenge!

Year one enjoyed our sponsored walk to raise money for Prostate cancer UK! They were very grateful to the grown ups' on the drinks station!

Maths- In maths today, we have been doing some experiments using water to test volume and capacity. We had lots of fun!

Science
In science, year 1 and 2 spent the lesson outside observing our environment carefully to find different objects and the materials they are made from.
Following on from our super fun practical lesson on mass yesterday, we have been solving problems involving mass today.
As the war in the Ukraine progresses, more and more questions are being asked by our pupils. Whilst it is important to be discrete and not frighten the children, it is also important they are aware of current issues and reasons behind them. This is a very confusing concept for children. We have been discussing this in PSHE.

This week in maths, we are looking at Mass. The children have been experimenting with balancing the scales and finding out the mass of objects using balance scales and cubes.

We had a very special visitor this week to Elliott Park School. Nick Butter has run a marathon in every country in the world, and we were lucky enough to hear some of his incredible stories. The children loved doing some running activities with him.
Because it's been a bit rainy today, we decided to compliment our PE lesson with a bit of guided movement. We had lot's of fun!
World Book Day at Elliott Park School! Year one and two are having lots of messy fun making 3D dragons based on 'Zog'. Zog is a dragon at Dragon school learning all the skills young dragons need to know.

Making 'Zog' dragons out of playdoh. We have enjoyed making friendly dragons, fierce dragons, cowardly dragons and brave dragons. What kind of dragon would you make?

Year one have enjoyed dressing up for World book day today!

Well done to Finley who won the pancake tossing competition for KS1!
Science
Year 1 have been learning all about materials. They predicted and then investigated which materials they could bend, twist, stretch and squash. They then thought about which materials are best suited to make certain objects.

Year one loved learning about our magnificent planet and have recalled lots of very interesting facts about Planet Earth.
Year 1 and 2 have been exploring different types of paper. They have been feeling different textured paper, describing the feel of them and talking about what these may be used for.
This week the children have been doing work around one of their favourite books, 'Zog'. They have been learning about using imperative (Bossy) verbs when writing instructions.
