Our Class Motto
'Every Mistake is a Learning Experience'
In year 4, children are encouraged that making mistakes should not be seen as a negative. In fact, this is how we grow as learners and helps build our resilience to never give up!
Welcome to our Year 4 learning environment
French - Term 5
We have been learning all about the Olympic games and their origins.
History Term 5
This term, we have focussed on our local history. Children explored the island on a day trip to 'hook' their interest in this topic. We have been creating fact files to ensure we let others know how wonderful our little island is!
PSHE
In PSHE, we explored how helpful and unhelpful thoughts can affect our emotions and feelings. We discussed strategies we could use to banish those unhelpful thoughts we may tell ourselves. Today, Stuart class created their very own 'positive thought superhero'. The job of our superhero is to remind us of all the wonderful things about us!

Topic
Inspired by our trip to the Bluetown heritage centre, Niamh decided to make WW1 Trench Cake at home. We were lucky enough to sample her creation and it was delicious! Why not have a go yourself on the link below...
We began our new Science topic - Living things - by sorting different animals in to groups depending on their characteristics.

Maths Term 5 - Week 1
Year 4 have been learning how to divide 2 and 3 digit numbers by 10. They have explored column placement and have moved on to incorporating decimals. Ted & Niamh had a go at being the teacher and explained to the rest of the class how each digit moves one column to the right, as it becomes ten times smaller.
English Term 5 Week 1
Year 4 began this term looking at features of an autobiography. Today, children interviewed each other to find out more information about one another's lives.

Being fluent in times tables is essential as children develop through key stage 2 in Mathematics. Daily practice is important in learning this key skill. In class, we use the Percy Parker song videos to help us recall multiplication facts. I have attached the link below, to enable children to continue with their practice at home.
The Great Elliott Park Bake Off
On the last day of term, Elliott Park held its very own bake-off! Stuart class had lots of fun making chocolate Easter baskets and traditional Scottish empire biscuits. They were delicious!
Year 4 & 5 had a great day at King's School, Rochester. Head over to the latest news page, to see what they got up to...

Children in Year 4 completed their own illustrations from our
class book 'The Great Kapok Tree'. They used a variety of mediums to re-create some of the breath-taking illustrations within the book. Mrs Crosby thinks they did a fabulous job

In English this week...
Year 3 & 4 have been exploring the book 'The Great Kapok Tree'. Today, they took it in turns to act out parts of the story from the perspective of some of the many creatures living in the Amazon Rainforest.

The Great Kapok Tree Role Play

Calligraphy Lessons
Year 4, 5 and 6 really enjoyed their first calligraphy lesson, where they were taught how to write the letters of the alphabet. They can't wait for their lesson next week!
World Book Day
Year 4 dressed to impress for World Book Day...
Exciting Science
This term, our Science topic is 'States of Matter.' Children explored how different states of matter are formed and identified the different make-up of particles in solids, liquids and gases. Children used their bodies and the breakfast cereal, cheerios, to represent the formation of these particles. The children had lots of fun and even managed to eat a few sneaky cheerios!

Elliott Park reading challenge 2022
This year is the 25th anniversary of 'World Book Day'
In celebration, we have launched a reading challenge for children to complete at home. Please see the attached document below for all details, good luck!!
Year 4 have been using the Cressida Cowell book 'How to Train Your Dragon' as inspiration for their learning this term. As part of this immersive unit, children designed and then created their very own dragon eyes. Mrs Crosby thinks they did a fantastic job, I'm sure you will agree!

In Maths, we have been using numicon to identify the relationship between fractions and decimals. We also explored perimeter by using post it notes to measure the perimeter of household objects. The children had lots of fun doing this!

We also looked at equivalent fractions and the different methods we could use to identify these.
Children's Mental Health Week
Children took part in activities to celebrate ‘Children’s Mental Health week’ between 7th – 13th February. This year's theme is ‘Growing Together’. We encouraged children to consider how they have grown and how they can help others to grow. Year 4 thought about how they could support others in maintaining a healthy and positive mind set. Children created kindness glasses to express ways they could help a friend in need.
